Majuli is famous for its mask making activities conducted in Samaguri Sattra. There are mostly three types of masks made in this Sattra- Mukha (face masks), Lotokai Mukha (masks created with movement of lips, eyes and hands), and Bor Mukha (life-size masks). Artists use different mythological characters to represent the masks. Popular among them are Jatayu, Hanuman, Brahma, Ravan, Ganesh and Bakasur, and many others.
Majuli is also a wetland and a habitat for rare species of birds. Every year in winter, the island sees the arrival of a number of migratory bird species.
