The allure of Assam’s beautifully combed tea garden bushes goes way beyond the specifics–it’s a different world in itself. The tall trees that shade the greens are thus the siris gaas, the tea picking couple that will romance amongst the bushes are Mini and Jugnu, their lives silhouetted by centuries of culture, of their people dancing their Jhumur, a beautifully rustic, four-beats-to-a-bar, or thereabouts, shuffle held together by the beat of the madol, a drum that’s second in sound perhaps only to the deep thunder that laps the skyline during the rains in these parts.
