The Karbi community has a rich cultural heritage that is reflected in their tradition, cuisine and artistic impressions. They are deeply connected with Nature, as they are with their agrarian values.
The drum is the primary musical instrument of Karbi culture. They call it the ‘Cheng’, and the drummer the ‘Duihudi’. They also use smaller drums or ‘Changbruk’ during festivals. Visit Vaani Greens in spring, and you’ll be in time for their Rongker festival. One of the main festivals of the Karbis, the celebrations include prayers to God for a good harvest.
If you are a gastronome and indigenous food excites you, you should look out for the Karbis’ Muklai and Amik Karai delicacies. These dishes are the identity of rich Karbi culture and a gastro’s delight! Sesame seed power and naturally grown herbs are the core ingredients of any delicacy the Karbis cook. The ones to savour include Kalangdang, Kangmoi, Kiphi, Kangthu, and Karnu Pakrengsoi. And of course no celebration is complete without binge drinking their homemade brews Hor and Ruhi.
